When I heard this phrase uttered by online entrepreneur James Wedmore during an episode of the Heart Soul Hustle podcast, I felt like I’d been hit by a bolt of lightning. Mind blown. I hit rewind on my podcast app and listened to it again:
“What got you here won’t get you there.”
And THAT, my friends, is central to the process of getting unstuck.
It took some effort, strategy, prayer, mindset shifts, and some level of support from friends and family, to get me from where I was to where I am now. But where I am now isn’t my ultimate destination. I need to get to the next milestone. Which will require new energy. New strategy. A deeper level of commitment. More prayer and fasting.
I’ll have to do something DIFFERENT to get to someplace ELSE.
A simple example is my current struggle to get to a healthy weight.
Almost a year ago, having learned I was pre-diabetic, I set out to lose weight. I cleaned up my diet and implemented a 4-to-5 days weekly workout. Over the course of the next 6 months I lost over 20 pounds.
Then the weight loss stopped.
Over the past 6 months, I’ve continued to eat clean and continued to work out regularly. I have dropped one more dress size but my weight on the scale stubbornly remains within 1 to 5 pounds of what I’ve weighed since January this year.
I’ve hit the dreaded plateau. I’m stuck.
The weight-loss experts all say the same thing. When you hit the plateau, it’s time to change up your routine. Everything from your diet to your exercise regimen to everything in between – rest, water intake – is fair game for a shakeup to jolt your body back into fat-burning mode.
So I’m about to make tweak my diet and change up my exercise regimen in my bid to lose 10 more pounds over the next 6 months.
Because I’ve realized – say it with me – “What got me HERE won’t get me THERE.”
Where are YOU stuck? In your career? Your marriage? Does your relationship with God feel like it’s stuck in a rut?
Whatever the issue, big or small, life-changing or just an everyday matter, take a look at what got you to where you’re at now. It worked – for where you are.
But if you’re still doing the same things and not making any headway, then it’s time to make some changes.
You may have to work harder or smarter. Or work less and rest more. Or pray more. Or take a break and look at the big picture. Or hire somebody, read a new book, take a new class, fast and seek the Lord.
You get the picture.
If where you are is great, but is not the ultimate destination where God called you to be – don’t settle for stuck. It’s time to shake things up.
Because what got you HERE won’t get you THERE.
