I actually surprised myself with the choices I made as I considered how to give myself treats throughout the day. Looking back on it, I was doing things to feed my soul.
Take food, for example. Over the past several months I’ve been very careful with my diet as I do battle against pre-diabetes and obesity. I thought that on my birthday I’d want to have a cheat day and treat myself to yummy, rich, unhealthy food I really like. I did treat myself to delicious food. But to my surprise, I wanted to treat myself to delicious food that was yummy AND good for me.
I wanted to give myself the gift of good health. My body felt good and my soul was happy.
Here’s another example. I had planned to head to the salon and get my nails done. But as my day unfolded I realised that I really wanted to spend as much time as possible being creative. I figured I could do my nails and shop for clothes at any time.
But my birthday gift to myself was the gift of time spent doing the thing I feel like I was born to do, the thing that feeds my soul.
So what I’ve learned is:
Self-care looks different for everyone.
Self-care also looks different depending on what season you’re in.
In this season I’m craving more time to be quiet, reflective and prayerful, more creative space, more focus on moving more and fueling my body with healthy food. So in this season, treating myself means gifting myself opportunities to meet those needs.
What do you NEED in this season of your life?
What is your soul LONGING for?
What PLANS are you making to give yourself the gift of whatever it is that will feed your soul?
Think about it. Pray about it. Make a plan to DO it.
Please comment and let me know what it is that feeds YOUR soul.
